History of Dieng Temple

The history of the Dieng Temple begins with the discovery of an inscription dating from 808. The inscription is the oldest inscription with Old Javanese writing. So the scientists concluded the Dieng Temple was built in the reign of the kings of Wangsa Sanjaya. In the Dieng temple area also found the statue of the god Shiva who is currently kept at the Jakarta National Museum.
This temple is expected to be built in two stages, where the first stage of construction was carried out around the middle of the 7th century until the beginning of the 8th century. Where the construction included the Arjuna temple, Srikandi Temple, Semar Temple, and Gatutkaca Temple. Then, the construction of the temple continued at the end of the 8th century, which was around 780 AD. It was estimated that the Dieng Temple was also estimated to be 400 in number, but now there are only 8 temples that we can see. Dieng Temple is also inhabited in the range of the early 7th century until the beginning of the 9th century.
In 1814, for the first time the dieng temple was rediscovered in a state of submerged in lake water by an English soldier who happened to be visiting the area. Until in 1856 drying was carried out to study the newly discovered temple building. The drying was led by Van Kinsbergen, then after the drying effort was finished. Followed by cleaning the parts of the temple by the Dutch East Indies government in 1864. Until the research was resumed by Van Kinsbergen by taking notes and taking some pictures.
